    Story

Working with clay in the past 2 years has had life changing benefits to my own mental health wellbeing. Through research and running clay workshops with a variety of community groups, I have discovered that there are many contributing factors which support increased wellbeing, reduced anxiety and depression, reduced stress and heart rate, self regulation and increased self esteem.

From September, this project, which will initially run for one year, will offer weekly enrichment opportunities to the clients at Harrogate Homeless Project, working with clay. They will have the opportunity to learn new skills, have a creative and mindful outlet, and work together to create a sustainable programme that will continue into the future.

The arts are an essential component of well-being and rehabilitation for individuals experiencing homelessness. While Harrogate Homeless Project’s day centre, Springboard, already offers crucial services like mental health support, housing assistance, and physical healthcare, integrating an arts program further enriches the holistic approach to healing and recovery. Engaging in arts activities has tremendous potential to inspire, uplift, and empower homeless clients. By fostering creativity and self-expression, these activities provide a safe outlet for emotions, enabling individuals to navigate and process their experiences effectively. The arts also have the power to promote mental well-being, enhance self-esteem, develop coping mechanisms, and instil a sense of purpose and accomplishment among participants. By introducing artistic-themed workshops alongside our other services at the day centre, we can harness the transformative power of the arts, helping with healing, resilience, and personal growth for those facing the challenges of homelessness.

The support received will pay towards clay, tools and an exhibition of works at the end of the year. Any additional amount will be put towards extending the project into a second year.
