Story
Julian Mustoe is an 82 year old yachtsman who has sailed single-handedly round the world in his 25ft yacht, Harrier of Down. On October 6th 2015, Julian and his beloved boat were sailing from Lerwick in the Shetland Islands to Norway when Harrier lost steering. After a narrow miss with an oil rig, Harrier was taken in tow by the Norwegian coastguard but then sank in 300 metres of water. Julian is safe but devastated by his loss. Many thanks to all the wonderful people who donated to the Harrier Appeal. Your generosity has been extraordinary and just under £10,000 has been raised after fees are paid. This will be enough for Julian to buy a modest little boat to live on so he can continue with his life. He is now much recovered from the ordeal and is immensely grateful to everyone for helping him so kindly. The photo above was taken a week or so after the disaster - Julian is holding the grab bag which was all he managed to salvage from Harrier. A sobering thought for all of us who go to sea in little boats.

9 years agoWhat a great start to our second month of fundraising for the Harrier Appeal. Apologies if people have been confused - we can only run each campaign for a month on JustGiving so we have started this one where the first one left off - at £8025 raised - aiming for £25,000!
