Story
I am looking for support in raising money to be able to travel to Tanzania in July 2020 as part of a volunteering programme. The programme I am looking to participate in explores cultural and social issues young women in Tanzania face and aims to aid them with confidence building, learning new skills and boosting self-esteem.
The reason I chose this particular project was because young girls around the world still face many difficulties and struggle more than they should. While education is one of the most important yet basic human right, many young children especially girls, miss out on opportunities to develop knowledge. Around 57 million children in the world reportedly do not have access to schools, and according to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) out of 774 million illiterate adults, 2/3 are women simply due to unequal access to education. Tanzania has a large number of young single mothers and widows due to many reasons. This means that an uneducated woman is required to take financial responsibility of her family on her own.
Taking part in this programme allows me to work on literacy, social development and run women’s empowerment workshops, education and entrepreneurship classes, advanced English, and/or even participating in nursery teaching. After more than a decade of community development work in the region, this project has seen hundreds of young women who missed out on basic education learn the skills necessary to better be able to provide for their families. Overall the project aim is to empower young women through education in rural Tanzania and play an important role in supporting them in human rights and health awareness thus contributing to UN's Sustainable Development Goals 3, Good Health & Wellbeing, as well as 5, Gender Equality. An educated young woman means a better and brighter future for herself and her family, therefore empowering society as a whole.
