Story
Women's Center "Gulrukhsor" has literally saved lives of women fleeing from domestic violence. In the times of deepest crisis, when women are frightened, hurt and in panic, when they think there is no one to help; we are there. Our dedicated and experienced team work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to provide safe space, to listen, and to care.
Women's Center "Gulrukhsor" is seeking urgent funding to cover the costs of running our shelter. The worst cases of violence are usually seen in the women staying in the shelter; women who have been raped and are facing severe health problems as a result, women who have been severely beaten, women who have suffered long term debilitating emotional abuse, women who are attempting suicide.
Women can stay in our shelter for as long as they need to. Sometimes all they need is a few hours, sometimes they need months. Mostly it is around a week to 10 days. The first priority is safety. Then calm. To be listened to. To start to heal. To think about the options. To decide on next steps. This process is individual and we support every woman in her own journey.
It is very rare that our shelter is empty. We have 3 bedrooms, but also other rooms that can be converted when space is tight. Women come with their children. Sometimes we have up to 13 people staying with us at one time. But most of the time there are 1 or 2 women with their children, with people coming and leaving all the time.
Everything is free of charge. We provide 3 meals a day, warmth in the winter, bathrooms with hot water and showers, clean bedrooms, washing of clothes, personal hygiene products for women and children, formula and nappies/diapers for young children as needed. We work closely with the emergency services, with paramedics coming out in emergencies to deal with health issues and police for security issues. When women or children need medical treatment, diagnostics, medicine, we work with local hospitals to get the care they need and buy medicine for her.
We have over a 100 women and children stay with us each year. The costs for running the shelter are relatively small, just over $1100 a month. But it has a life changing impact on women’s lives. Many are literally transformed by the safety and refuge provided by the shelter and the care of the women who staff it.
Founded in 1996, 2021 was the 25th anniversary of Public Organisation Women’s Center “Gulrukhsor”, based in Khujand. We are currently looking for funding of $14,000 to fund our shelter for a year. These funds don’t go towards to costs of running the office. All of your donations are dedicated to providing women victims of violence with essential refuge in times of crisis, and cover electricity, water, food, and personnel staffing the shelter.
Any funding that you would be able to provide us with would make a huge difference to the lives of women in Khujand and the surrounding areas.

Women's Centre "Gulrukhsor"
10 months agoAlready a new year. In 2023 we had 104 women & children stay in our shelter, which equals our record from 2022 & 2015. The shelter is open 24/7, and allows women fleeing violence to find safety & refuge. Often arriving in the middle of night, sometimes suicidal, women in our shelter find care & support. The first shelter to open in Tajikistan, since 2011 we have housed 920 women & children. We are trusted & respected, which means women feel safe with us. Thank-you for your donations, & your important role in helping us to help women in crisis.

1 year agoSome feedback chatting with a woman staying in our shelter. "I saw your centre on TV 2 yrs ago where they showed how you protect women's rights. When I was being beaten, I was not allowed out the house/ didn't know where to go. Then I remembered the TV show & came to you. Here I feel safe. I know my husband can't come & beat me. You have cameras, security guards. You are supported by international organisations. From the beatings I was very scared when I 1st came here. But now I sort things 4 myself. I can feel your care. I know I am not alone"

2 years agoI know it's April already! We're nearly ready to publish our 2022 annual report. I wanted to share in advance that in 2022 we managed to work with nearly 5000 people. This is an amazing milestone for us, & testament to the very close links that we are building with our local communities. We had 101 women & children in our shelter, provided 2784 consultations to women & families in crisis, & worked with 2142 people on preventing violence & improving family relationships. To all our supporters who are on this journey with us, thank-you so much.
