Iʼve raised £10 to provide training to women living in refuges in Dakar

    Story

    Hi, we’re Green Wave!

A social enterprise operating in Dakar, Senegal - teaching women living in refuges how to make contemporary and sustainable jewellery.

    CONTEXT.

There is a high rate of violence in Senegal - 1 in 2 women are likely to experience domestic violence, including sexual, physical and psychological abuse.

Women’s refuges like Maison Rose provide a beautiful oasis of calm, safety and reflection – often supporting & housing women for months at a time.

Yet in a society with low education rates for women, leaving the shelter and finding a way to financially provide for yourself is challenging.

Often women are left with a limited set of options - low paid work as cleaners, sex work, or returning to violent households.

    WHAT WE DO.

Our aim is to support these women to achieve financial independence, in a safe and therapeutic way.

We do this by providing three months of free training. All women are offered a job at the end of the training (that pays over 3 times the Senegalese minimum wage & 5 times most jobs as a cleaner).

We focus exclusively on creative processes, made entirely by hand – to maximise the social and wellbeing benefits that creation can provide.

The most rewarding part for us is watching the pride and sense of personal achievement that our trainees feel at their end of training party – where we exhibit their work & celebrate their successes.

It’s always an emotional day for us all.

    WHY ARE WE FUNDRAISING?

We are now expanding our training programme to more women – and to offer more creative specialities, so women can select the course that most appeals to them.

We rely entirely on donations to be able to provide our courses free of charge for the shelters.

It only costs £500 to train a woman for three months – which then unlocks a stable job in a safe and creative environment.

We would massively appreciate any donation you are able to share – every little really does count.

    Thank you!
