Story
"“It’s only through working together that we can help nature recover,” Beccy Speight, RSPB chief executive, 2023. Greening Arundel is an alliance of 15 organisations working together to help make the town greener, more efficiently and sustainably.
The initiative is supported by the Green Team, a group of 30 local volunteers who have rolled their sleeves up to implement a series of projects across the town - transforming the station pathway and the Quayside bed, maintaining the Pollinator Garden and planting herbs in troughs across town. We are being supported by Arundel Town Council, the South Downs Trust, the Royal Horticultural Society, and the Sussex Ornithological Society, as well as by local businesses and organisations.
But there is much more to do. We are raising funds to increase bio-diversity by planting up more troughs and to transform green spaces such as the station forecourt. We want to help make Arundel a haven for wildlife through our Bring Back the Birds campaign for example. We are aiming to reduce environmental damage through encouraging positive greening practices. We are finding ways to engage as many locals as possible in greening activities and partnering with charities, such as the Aldingbourne Trust. We are working hard on sustainability by growing on our own allotment.
Please support us by volunteering, donating or sending a message of support.

Green Team
5 months agoNational Highways has confirmed that their contractors caused the damage to the beds along the station path. Our Mayor has spoken to his contact there who assured him that a full enquiry is underway to understand how this could have happened and to put in place measures to mitigate against anything like this occurring again. In the meantime, West Sussex County Council has supplied the Green Team with new tools and we have been overwhelmed by the support from well-wishers.

Green Team
5 months agoWe are sorry to say that all the plants along the station path were strimmed on 30 June. The transformation of the station beds has involved over 700 hours of volunteer time by the Green Team and weekly watering by the Aldingbourne Trust. It also reflects contributions from Arundel Town Council and local businesses. The flowers have supported pollinators and other wildlife and brought great pleasure to residents and visitors alike. This is a serious set-back, but plants are resilient and so are we!

Green Team
7 months agoAnd we are not just spotting and reporting on birds! Following the successful wildlife gardening event, two training sessions were held on insect monitoring and reporting through the UK's Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (POMS). Once a baseline is established, we will be able to track changes and hopefully demonstrate improvements in bio-diversity and bio-abundance.
