Iʼve raised £3,690 to To help fund essential repairs to the Replica Viking Longship the Dim-Riv. A much loved and iconic vessel based in Lerwick since 1980

    Story

The Dim-Riv was built and launched in 1979/1980 and has been a focal point in Lerwick Harbour and around Shetland ever since. It was built by local boat builder Alan Moncrieff on behalf of Da Longship Committee, who raised the money needed through local appeals.

As stated the Dim-Riv is an iconic vessel and is one the most photographed vessels in Lerwick Harbour and provides a tangible link to Shetland's Viking heritage and has brought vast amounts of pleasure to many folk, both local and visiting over the years, while sailing either around Lerwick Harbour or the various places around Shetland she has visited over the years.

Anyone who owns a wooden boat will know that fresh water is the killer. After The Dim-Riv was taken out of the water this year, we carried out an in-depth survey and found that a large proportion of the top board and gunnel were suffering form rot caused by fresh water ingress and was rotting from the inside out. Some bits were ok, but after discussions with experts, it was decided that the only sensible way was to replace all of the top board and the gunnel. As this was the most cost effective and easiest way to go. Bearing in mind that she will be 45 years old in 2025 and this is the first major repairs needed, it is a true testament to Alan's building skills.

Since Covid, our costs have risen exponentially and this has used up what little resources/savings we had, we find ourselves in the position of needing help with funding towards getting her fixed.

We have managed to source most of the materials required and have folk willing to undertake the repairs, but it all costs, with materials coming in around £4100 and labour around £3000. So we are hoping to try and raise £8000, as this will give us a bit of "wiggle room" should costs exceed any quotes.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you to anyone who donates.

Hi all, firstly can I thank everyone who took the time to donate. Without your kind donations, we would probably not have been able to get the work done? Jewson's Lerwick Depot are now donating all the required materials to complete the work needed. Also with all the donations delivered personally to me, we have reached our required total. So we will be closing this page in December and thank you all again. Graham Nicolson Chair "Da Lonship Committee" "Dim-Riv Harbour tours"
