Global Woman is hopeful to raise an initial £10,000 for the support of the survivors of the Albanian Earthquakes.

For the second time in only two months, a powerful and deadly earthquake has crippled areas of Albania. The biggest earthquake struck at 03:54 local time Tuesday 26th November. The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.4, and an epicenter 30 km northwest of the capital Tirana. There have also been numerous severe aftershocks with magnitudes between 5.1 and 5.4 along with ongoing tremors in the 2-4’s on the Richter scale.

Global Woman Club CEO & Founder Mirela Sula originates from Albania, the Global Woman community from around the world have been to Albania several times, hosting Empowering Women Conferences in Tirana and directors training workshops in the city of Durres, a town that was has been devastated by its proximity to the epicentre of both these earthquakes. For our community, this is a day of great sadness, as now 51 people have been confirmed deceased during this crisis and over 900 have required hospital treatment, the hospital in Durres is damaged itself and many patients were evacuated from the facility, thankfully all are presently considered to be medically stable.

Numerous buildings collapsed ‘pancaked’ leaving many crushed or trapped.

The search and rescue mission has been deemed successful with 42 located live and receiving medical treatments.

We ask for your financial support joining together to assist with the urgently needed demolition for safety and reconstruction of their homes and replacements of their daily living needs.1000’s are displaced from homes ( many high rise buildings) yet to be inspected by structural engineers, families with young children/ elderly residents have been sleeping in their cars once dark and in cafes during daylight, some now have been moved into tents set up by NGO’s and military aid coming locally and from overseas.

Neighbours are helping neighbours with all beds and guest rooms along with hotels where able offering temporal solutions to meet immediate needs. Specialists teams from many countries have arrived and been working round the clock to prevent further loss of life, they arrived with specialist skills, equipments including the canines in the team.

Coordination has been slow but from today reports and organisation is evolving which will increase the impact of the aid and its usefulness to those in need. With your help we can get funds to those working on the ground to procure locally and meet the needs.

Four Global woman club members in Tirana club are part of NGO’s and mobilised quickly to get aid into the areas and along with the Director and other volunteers are helping with the immediate needs of shelters, clothing ( people left there beds in the early hours) outdoor warm clothing, shoes, food, mattresses and blankets, formula, nappies, feminine hygiene products, medications etc.

Our money raised is going to be spent on the ground by these NGO’s and we know this is already making a difference.

It’s winter in Albania and last night heavy rains and storms already forecast rained down adding to the misery and anguish with added quakes and further tremors through a terrifying night.

Long term medical needs for psychological ptsd form the events will also be required as everyone is jittery on edge at every tremor further.
