Iʼve raised £9,200 to purchase a powered wheelchair base for Robert

    Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire
Funded on Monday, 18th November 2024

Don't have time to donate right now?

    Story

Robert needs a new wheelchair to help improve his quality of life and give him much more independence. As he does not have the funds for this I want to help him by crowdfunding. Can you help get Rob his wheelchair!

Robert is 28 years old, with pro-found and multiple learning disabilities which he has had since birth. His previous power-chair broke after over 8 years of use. This was around 6 months ago after a day out to Liverpool where it's final journey saw the Liverpool Eye being brought to a stop and the fire-brigade being called to help get him off!!!

Without power, he and his wheelchair are very difficult to push on a day-to-day basis. Getting him in and out of his wheelchair adapted car, out for walks, into town and around local parks are much harder than they need to be, especially with all the slopes, hills and terrain we have here in Staffordshire.

Whilst all of his care staff at his residential home in Blurton do their very best to push him, they really are struggling and hurting themselves whilst pushing, this often means he does not get to go on as many day trips or walks around the park as no-one is able to push him.

This is a link the powered base we have been advised would meet his needs best and will be compatible with the new seating system he is getting from the NHS Wheelchair service - Quickie Q300 R Powered Wheelchair

Sadly Robert does not meet the criteria of a powered chair on the NHS as he does not have the ability to control it himself and relies on an attendant controlled chair.

This has not been easy, putting this pledge out in the public domain, as it is really difficult for me to ask help of others for something for my son.

Thank you for taking the time to read this story and if you can help in any way at all and get Rob mobile again then I will be forever in your debt.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart

So, 2nd of the 4 Welsh Half Marathons done ✔️ Huge thanks again, to all those that have continued to donate. 🙏 I can confirm the this base is now ready for him; however we are still waiting for the NHS wheelchair service to supply us with the seating system that is specifically measures for his shape, size and needs. We were promised an 8 week turnaround following months of issues.....22 weeks later and we are, very frustratingly still waiting!!! I'll keep you all updated but 🤞 not too much longer to wait. 👨‍🦽🧑‍🦼🧑‍🦼🧑‍🦼

So, we had the demo for the new wheelchair base on Monday and a full quote over on Tuesday with the chair now on order!! Yay!! However: due to the need for it to be attendant controlled, as Robert can't control it himself and the fact that a number of different people will be using the control system....we had to go with the option which was most user friendly..... And yep, you guessed it, the most expensive at £2390.00!!! So the total now needed, comes to £9200 We still have plenty fundraising events planned, so am very optimistic.

We've done it!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you 🙏🥰🙏🥰🙏🥰 I'm over the moon to say we have raised all this money in such a short space of time. We have a demo this coming Wednesday to try out the base & ensure we get all the correct fixtures and fittings needed to be compatible with the seating system he has on order with the Wheelchair Service. ♿️ Any funds raised over the taehet will be used for extended warranty, insurance and other accessories needed, of which there are plenty, such as rain cover, sun canopy &spare battery etc
