I am trying to raise £1,640 to repair the World War 1 Memorial at St Andrew’s Church in Bishop Auckland. As you can see from the photograph the memorial is covered in moss and some of the inscriptions need to be repainted. The Memorial was built in 1920 by the people of Bishop Auckland in recognition of the local men who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War. The money for for the monument was raised by public subscription and I have not been able to find any records which may tell me who is responsible for repair and maintenance.

A few facts about the Memorial. It is a Saxon Cross which stands seventeen feet tall and weighs seven and a half tons. It was designed and erected by Messrs W Allison & Sons who are the company who have agreed to complete the work.

As the public gave their money in 1920 I am hoping public of today will be as generous to restore the memorial to it former glory.
