Story
After raising more than £2,700 by running the London Marathon, FC United Board member George Baker is now taking on the Great Manchester Run.
Read George’s story below...
George Baker has courageously – and some would say stupidly – agreed to run the London Marathon on Sunday 22 April 2018 to raise money for FC United’s Development Fund so that the club can continue to deliver numerous fantastic community projects – and host the odd football match - from our home at Broadhurst Park.
Please support George as he attempts to run his first ever marathon - a gruelling 26.2 miles which should only be attempted by regular runners and foolhardy part-timers who are prepared to go through the pain barrier to raise money for good causes.
George says:
So I've agreed to run this year's London Marathon at ridiculously short notice in order to raise money for FC United's Development Fund.
'Why raise money for a football club?’ you may ask. Well, FC United are not just another football club, they are a Community Benefit Society who do a hell of a lot of good work in the communities of Moston and North Manchester. This includes coaching in local schools, continuing our partnership with junior football club Moston Juniors, running our academy and regular collections for food banks, refugees and Manchester's homeless.
January's Big Coat Day, hosted before a recent home game, was the 12th year in a row that fans and well-wishers donated and collected warm clothing to distribute to the homeless. This was only a couple of weeks after we opened our ground to the homeless of Manchester on Christmas Day for the second year in a row.
I've never ran so much as a 5K before so please spur me on by donating to my fundraising page so FC United can continue their great work. I hope to run the London Marathon in under six hours but I'll be over the moon if I just manage to complete the course in enough time to receive an official time! Every donation big and small is very much appreciated.”

7 years agoSo I managed to complete the London Marathon in 6 hours, 31 minutes. Gutted not to do it in under my 6 hour target but it was really hot so I've got an excuse. A HUGE thank you to everyone who sponsored me, followed my progress and sent me congratulatory messages afterwards, it means the world. We managed to smash the £2k target but as we've come so close to raising £3k, I've decided to do the Great Manchester Run this Sunday in an effort to top it up. Hopefully we can break that £3k mark and then I'll take a well earned break from running!

7 years agoA massive thank you to everyone who has sponsored me so far, whether they're friends from FCUM, family, work colleagues & the bloke in the Grey Horse on Portland Street who donated when he overheard me talking about the marathon! I'm actually far more excited than terrified and I can't wait to get going on Sunday. I'm thinking of that pint in Westminster with FCUM London & Southern branch once I've crossed the line! Please spread the word and encourage anyone you know to chip in, even if it's just a couple of quid, all contributions welcome.

7 years agoThanks for all your generations donations so far. I've completed 15 outdoor runs since I began my training in mid-January and have covered a distance of 83km in less than 10 hours total. This includes the Guiseley Gallop 10k I did on Sunday. You've helped to raise more than £1,200 so far, including an extra £30 in cash donations I received at Leamington away on Saturday. I'm aiming to raise £2,000 in total for the club, so please help me get there by giving whatever you can afford. Thank you!
