Story
It’s a stupid idea but the best we could come up with! To raise money for the Leapgate Activity Centre, Debbie and Bec are undertaking a charity motorbike ride from Lands End to John O'Groats. Setting off on September 9th we 'hope' to arrive on the exotic shores of John O'Groats on September 16th. The trip is part of the September Garbage Run, so we'll not be travelling on any motorways, but taking in some of the countrys most beautiful B roads.
To keep our costs down it’ll be a ‘luxurious’ trip, camping in fields, feasting on tinned beans and peeing in bushes, so every penny we raise will go to the charity.*
To be honest, we're probably a bit inexperienced and broken to be undertaking such a journey, but hey, what could possibly go wrong (answers on a postcard please)? On this note, although we will be riding down to the start line at Lands End, we will be putting the bikes in a van to get them home from John O'Groats - so, if anyone out there would like to donate a transit van* on the weekend of September 16th, we would be eternally grateful.
*Update! We have a transit van!!!! Fields of Dunley are lending us a van to bring the bikes back from John O'Groats!!!
ABOUT THE LEAPGATE ACTIVITY CENTRE
The Leapgate Centre is a new enterprise being set up near Stourport-on-Severn within a working farm. Funds are required to provide the environment, staff and resources for people with learning disabilities to take part in enrichment activities. Activities will be tailored to the needs of the individual but will include animal care, catering, craft, horticulture, woodworking and Zumba. One key element of the centre will be an evening club where young people can 'hang out' with people of their own age in a safe environment. The emphasis of the centre will be on having fun with peers and improving health and well being.
SO WHY ARE WE FUNDRAISING FOR THE LEAPGATE ACTIVITY CENTRE?
“This is my cousin’s son, Ben. A lot of my biker friends will have met Ben socially, or on Ben’s birthday ride out - still fondly remembered by our local biking community as just the most perfect ride out we've ever done. Ben loves motorbikes, speedway, is an avid Kidderminster Harriers and Manchester United fan (blame his Dad, he's a Mancunian! ). He is a member of the Special Olympics and takes part in athletics, gymnastics and basketball .
Ben is 21 and typical of the many youngsters with varying learning difficulties who will use the Leapgate Centre. It will be a place which will enrich their learning experiences and a place they can simply hang out with their mates in a safe and secure environment. For these and so many other reasons, I will move heaven and hell to help achieve the fundraising required to set up and keep running the Leapgate Activity Centre” - Debbie

7 years agoWe got home last night after traveling 1708 miles from the Motorcycle Mart to Lands End and then on to John O'Groats. It took 8 days, it was wet, windy and chilly. We found it to be tough riding on some of the UK's greatest A and B roads. We passed through the rural roads of Cornwall, Devon, the Cotswolds, Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Cumbria and up around the NC500 - It was a proper adventure. We would like to thank every single person who donated their time and money to support us, and we look forward to planning our next adventure!
