Fabulous Phonics is an exciting fundraising project between Central Schools Trust and Mikeys Wish aimed at giving ALL children the best start possible to learn to read.

Phonics allows young readers to develop their reading comprehension. With practice, pupils' decoding skills become so automatic that they are able to concentrate on and easily understand the overall meaning of what they are reading. Phonics also raises children's phonemic awareness.

Phonics instruction plays a key role in helping students comprehend text. It helps the student map sounds onto spellings, thus enabling them to decode words. Decoding words aids in the development of word recognition, which in turn increases reading fluency.

Our chosen phonics programme with matching, decodable is an effective and engaging way to help pupils to learn to read through play. This programme uses the synthetic phonics technique, which is specifically designed to help children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) to make progress in reading.

Since leaving school, Mikey has worked tirelessly to fundraise and give back in order to help other pupils. Now, working directly with pre-school children, he is an inspiration to others and has been invited to speak in America as well as the UK.

We plan to hold a series of events and call on existing sponsors and donors, to raise £30,000 to give over 1,000 children a better start with reading. These valuable resources will be used for many years to come. Keep checking back for updates and event information.
