Story
One of the known barriers to using plastic-free products such as period pants is the initial cost. Period poverty, period anxiety and embarrassment about discussing periods can all make it difficult for young people to explore their options. This project aims to open up the conversation about periods and provide an opportunity to try plastic-free period products, regardless of finances.
As part of the project, Plastic free. Period team members Charlotte Carson and Jo Morris have been visiting schools across Frome, spreading the word about plastic-free period products. Period pants offer greater comfort, can be worn for longer without changing, and are reusable, making them better for the environment too.
There are so many reasons to switch to plastic-free period products, but the stigma around periods is still a big barrier, as is the upfront cost of products. The more we can normalise and engage with our body and its needs, whilst thinking about the impact our choices have on our planet, the more we can break down these barriers. If we can raise the money to give every year 8 and 9 student that needs them a celebration pack, that will go a long way to support those choices as well. This is an opportunity for you to support a young person in Frome to make the switch." - Project champion Fiona Barrows
This project now hopes to give students in year 8 and year 9 an introductory period pack. Each pack cost £15 and contain three pairs of period pants, a washable pad, a waterproof bag and a booklet & period tracker.
Please donate the cost of a period pack, or whatever you can afford, to help us help young people make the switch to plastic-free period products, right from the start.
If you are keen to make the switch yourself or support someone you know to make the switch, keep an eye on Green & Healthy Frome updates here . We will be releasing the national and local discount codes just for Frome residents by the beginning of May 2024.
Standard disposable period products contain up to 90% plastic, and a single user throws away up to 200kg of plastic waste. That’s a huge amount of plastic being added to landfill, not to mention the amount of period waste that makes its way into our waterways.
It’s a win/win/win – if we can successfully raise our target, we can really make a difference to the conversation around periods for over 300 students. We will really be able encourage well-being - helping students by addressing period poverty, supporting them through period anxiety and also doing our bit to help students make sustainable choices – saving potentially thousands of sanitary products from landfill. With your help we can get the packs into schools and really make a difference to our young people. The young person’s clinic takes place at Frome Medical Practice every Wednesday on a drop in basis from 3pm - 5pm." - Vic Yerbury, Practice Nurse at Frome Medical Practice
