Story
So far I have raised a total of £18,550 in my goal to raise money for these two amazing charities. I thank everyone who has generously supported and helped to date.
Please read my story below...
After being misdiagnosed with a trapped nerve in my spine, multiple visits to my GP, dosed up on strong medication and seeing physiotherapists for 3 weeks, I ended up in A and E (after being told multiple times not to go, when we called 111). I was in agony and in so much pain.
With becoming jaundiced and very faint on the third week, I was told by my physio that I should have had blood tests. Mum could not arrange this quick enough with the GP, and because I was deteriorating, this resulted in her rushing me to Hull A and E (2nd September).
I was seen quite quickly, examined, bloods taken and put on a drip (the staff were so kind and helpful). After a short time the bloods came back and we were given the news that there was something seriously wrong and it needed further investigation.
Whilst waiting for a bed to become free I was told that I was to be transferred to Castle Hill Hospital and an ambulance was being prepared.
Once I arrived at Castle Hill Hospital, I was taken to my own room where I was seen by a consultant. I was given the news nobody wants to hear. The results from my bloods suggested a high chance I had a type of blood cancer (not the news I hoped to hear), and it looked like one of two types of acute leukaemia.
During the next few days I underwent many tests, including a bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture, PET scan and MRI scan. The tests then gave a clear diagnosis.
I was diagnosed with stage 4 acute Burkitts lymphoma. This is cancer in the bone marrow and lymph system - a very rare cancer which is both leukaemia and lymphoma. Only 210 people are diagnosed each year in the UK.
With this result they quickly made a start with treatment. I was told that Castle Hill would be my home for at least the following 3 months.

I had four stages of aggressive chemo treatments, with being allowed to go home for a few days to rest in between each course.
The first involved having various chemos every day for two weeks. Short sessions, long sessions and also into my spine. The very first was terrifying for me and the hospital team, as I reacted badly.
The second course was a constant cocktail of chemo from the early hours of the morning through to late at night and repeated for 5 days.
Both these stages were then repeated for the following two courses.
As well as having chemo, I had a lot of blood and platelet transfusions as my counts were frighteningly low.

After finishing my treatment (21st November) I was then able to return home to recover and build myself up again. Although, only a week later, I ended up back in for a week with sepsis.
I was given a further 3 months to recover, involving regular check ups and more blood transfusions until my bloods were stable.
Once my body had had time to recover and the chemo could flush out of my system I was able to have a scan to determine a result.
I am so happy to be able to say I was given the all clear and after being in remission for 2 years I have had my check up and I am still in the clear.
I can’t thank all the consultants, nurses, Teenage Cancer Trust, and the entire team enough, who work in ward 33 in The Queen’s Centre, at Castle Hill. They do an amazing job and are so kind and friendly. I nearly lost my life and they cared and looked after me, to cure me.
And to all those people who give blood. I needed so many transfusions and I wouldn’t be here without them.
I would also like to say thank you so much to everyone who has supported me through this. I received so many kind words, prayers, cards and gifts from family, friends, and customers of the farm shop.

Going forward, I plan to support the hospital and continue to help medical students, as I did in hospital, and I aim to raise awareness and funds for WISHH (Castle Hill Hospital) and Teenage Cancer Trust.
I have set a goal to climb Kilimanjaro in 2025. During the time leading up to this I will continue to look after myself and gain my strength back, to train as much as I can to prepare my body for this challenge.
I would be so grateful if you are able to donate and help raise funds for these two amazing charities, to help patients and families in similar life changing situations.
I have now booked my place for the big climb which will take place in June 2025. Keep an eye out as there will be more fundraising events to come.
Thank you to everyone who has been with me on this journey so far.
Freddie x
