Story
The Flamingo Pool, a self-funded charity, was brought to reality by a massive community effort to raise funds following a lottery reversal of decision to fund the project. Local residents pulled together to ensure that the project became more than just a pipe dream. A steering committee was formed and worked tirelessly to find funding for the 25m pool and the country’s first 6m2 hydrotherapy pool open to the public. The Flamingo Pool opened its doors in 1998 and has been at the heart of the community ever since. We see ourselves as an essential community hub for people to meet, socalise, exercise and forge life long friednships.
At the Flamingo Pool, we aim to provide & maintain an eco-friendly public community swimming pool for the benefit of the residents and visitors of Axe Valley by offering the best aquatic activities in a safe & enjoyable environment, a high standard of affordable exercise, fun facilities, teaching programmes, classes & local employment opportunities. By using solar panels and pool covers, we lower our carbon footprint and save money. Plastic Free, Dementia friendly and Positive About Breast Feeding status adds to our community presence.
Both pools are disinfected by Ultra-Violet (UV) light so that the level of chlorine in the pools is approximately a third of a normally disinfected pool.
The 6m2 hydrotherapy pool with therapeutic pressure jets is open to the public & used by 3 local hospitals for physiotherapy & remedial use. We offer pre-work, general, lane, off-peak & adult's swimming, family fun, inflatable parties, parent toddler & aquafit sessions. Group & private one to one swimming lessons run to ASA standards, elite & swimming club competitive sessions. Local primary school swimming lessons, RLSS Rookies lifesaving & water survival skills, which can progress to a lifeguard qualification & sports industry career, a sun bed and training courses. We also offer a fully equipped AquaGym, suitable for everyone; experienced or novice exercisers, fit and unfit, young and old, swimmers and non-swimmers and those wanting a zero impact or rehabilitative exercise as well as a GP Referral scheme specifically designed for GP referred clients to enable them to exercise in a safe environment, assisted by highly qualified instructors, in a way that they would be unable to on land.
Unfortunalty along with other local businesses, the Flamingo Pool was forced to close its doors on Saturday 21st March 2020, due to the Coronavirus pandemic and has been hit extremely hard financially by the government enforced lock-down estimating a loss of around £50,000 whilst ensuring all amenities have been scaled back as far as is achievable to save as much as possible.
New measures including reduced space and therefore customer capacity will impact us further financially, leading to a decision that at this current time for financial viability reasons we have been forced to remain closed. This has been an extremely difficult decision to make, however we remain committed to reopening the Flamingo Pool as soon as it is reasonably practicable. For these reasons we have decided to set up this Just Giving page, for all those who wish to show their support of your community swimming pool.
