Almost 50 years ago, as a young teen I was no longer able to return to my home. My family is scattered across the globe with many staying behind in Lebanon throughout the 10 years of civil war. I was too young to fully appreciate what my mother and family were going through. At that time, we had no Internet or modern technology and social media to make people globally aware of the death and destruction that was happening during the conflict.
My wife and partner of 15years is Ukrainian and this past year, I have come to fully understand what my mother and family went through. She and a small group of expat Ukrainians in Brighton and Hove got together to support the Ukrainian refugees in the area, and I help in any way I can.
Our group also forged ties with the Ukrainian charity ‘Hromadska varta’ (USREO code: 44821946) to deliver humanitarian aid to the Kharkiv region of Ukraine. This is the region which is currently bearing the brunt of the ongoing conflict.
As of today, we are coming up to the tragic anniversary of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine with no indication that it will end any time soon. Vital civilian infrastructure has been targeted and destroyed, as well as hospitals, schools, and homes. Many thousands of Ukrainians have died; many thousands have been injured.
With the spring approaching and the military offensives from both sides begin, those numbers are going to dramatically increase. Medical supplies and safety equipment are already in short supply, and much more is desperately needed.
I’ve taken it on myself to source the medical supplies. These would include essential lifesaving medical products that are urgently needed in hospitals: Portable Ultrasound machines, Battlefield dressings, Curaplex Patient Movers, Trauma fix bandages, Celox haemostats, Chest Seals, and decompression needles for lung injuries, C.A.T. tourniquets, and any other such product that becomes urgently required.
Every penny of every donation will be used to purchase the supplies and all transportation cost will be covered by our group in Brighton. Using our existing network, and with the volunteers in Ukraine we will deliver these supplies to the hospitals, towns, and villages in the region that most need it.
All donations, however small, will save lives.
Many thanks in advance.
