Story
Fair Isle Bird Observatory has been tragically destroyed in a fire that started on Sunday 10th March 2019. This page has been set up to help cover the costs of items such as artwork and books that the insurance won't cover.
The observatory was only built in 2010 and offered accommodation to visitors of the island. It is vitally important for the seabird research that is carried and for the local community of 60 people that live on Fair Isle. It is a registered Scottish charity (SCO 11160) - I set up this page as they didn't yet have one, but I am nothing to do with the charity myself, I just wanted to help out! They do now have their own that can be found here.
From BBC News: Observatory president Roy Dennis said the building had been "lost to fire", adding it was "absolutely tragic news". A family including two children who live in the flat adjoining the lodge were unhurt. Mr Dennis said: "Thank goodness no loss of life but heartfelt sympathy to David, Susannah and family and the islanders. We will rebuild. We have lost much and will lose a year. Close to my heart - very very sad." (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-47515175)
Please help raise funds to help replace items such as artwork and books for the observatory that the insurance won't cover!

6 years agoThank you for helping to raise an incredible £473 for the bird observatory! As you can see, I have closed this page early because there is another fundraising page set up by the people who live on Fair Isle and if you wish to donate, I would recommend doing so through their page. I am going to pay in these funds through the FIBO website and you can also donate through there should you wish to. Once again, thank you for your support!

6 years agoThank you to everyone for your support. As I said before, I am not affiliated with the observatory, I just wanted to help out! There is another fundraising page set up for the Parnaby family which I have provided the link to here: https://www.gofundme.com/helping-the-parnaby-family-after-bird-obs-fire?fbclid=IwAR1J1lf5PsZW2bbQsFbf30BczXXOL1McNqgWVkGNwdi-CirFVx2FZPTbTGs should you wish to donate via this page instead. I plan on keeping this page open for a month before I send the funds onto Fair Isle Bird Observatory. Thank you again!

Fair Isle
I'm a 21 year old Conservation Biology student at University of Exeter, Penryn Campus in Cornwall. I've not been to Fair Isle but my friend volunteered there in the past. It greatly saddens me that the observatory has been destroyed and I hope these funds will help out.
