    Story

My uncle Joey recently become quite poorly and on the 17th October suffered a life changing Subarachnoid Haemorrhage – which is a bleed on the brain. He complained of headache and the next we realised he was being rushed to Leeds General Infirmary where he was operated on immediately to stop the bleeding. This is quite an uncommon type of stroke and accounts for 1 in every 20 in the UK which is caused by bleeding on the surface of the brain and can be fatal. There is usually no warning signs but symptoms are described as a sudden agonising head ache and vomiting. The surgery was successful and the reason Joe is still with us today is through the staff's dedication at the LGI who have cared for him since he came out of theatre. He was on the Neuroscience Critical Care, followed by Neuro High Dependency Unit for several weeks and has just recently been transferred to a Neuro General Ward, where he will continue to be cared for until he is ready to move to a rehab centre. He has a long way to go, but he is on the road to recovery. The Physio Team work miracles and some of the things they were doing with my Uncle in just the days following his surgery were incredible. The Physio team have such a tough task and quite often it takes 3 or 4 of them just to get a patient to the end of their bed. Last week when we were with Joe, the Physio team had sat him in a chair called a Sara Combilizer. They were incredibly excited about the chair, which is actually on loan from the manufacturer as the hospital can’t afford one, one chair is £15k. They began to demo the chair and told us how effective it is in aiding patients rehab and physio. In just a few steps the chair went from being in a sitting upright position, to standing position and then laid down. Moving Joe from his chair to bed would usually take between 3-4 members of staff and is quite stressful for some patients the chair makes this experience less stressful for patients and more erfective for the hospital staff.
