Story
Graham suffered from a rare dementia called Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) People with this condition may have trouble producing words, although they know what they want to say. Speaking may take a lot of effort and words may not come out right. They may have difficulty understanding what is being said and find it harder to make decisions or plans. Some people show signs similar to Parkinson’s disease such as shaking, being unsteady on their feet or having trouble using their hands. It’s also common for people to feel frustrated and low in mood.
When you are dealing with dementia it is easy to feel isolated and alone but Dementia Cafés provide a social, safe environment where people can feel relaxed and talk to people who really understand. 'The volunteers are there to listen to everyone and make sure no one is left out. Graham loved going to the Memory Lane Cafe and to Friday Friends, two dementia cafes here in Ipswich. These groups gave him a real boost and he would look forward to going every week. They provide tea, biscuits and hot lunches as well as a range of free activities such as exercise sessions, music, singing, dancing, games and quizzes. The volunteers are amazing, everyone gets a really warm welcome and there is lots of advice and support for carers.
Graham sadly passed away on 6 June 2020 but he would have been delighted that donations are going to two charities that he really cared about. The money raised will make a real difference to these two local groups and will help their volunteers carry on the amazing work that they do. They really are a lifeline.
