    Story

'Earth to Alice' is a show that I have put my heart and soul into, and it is at a very exciting stage in its development. It began as a simple live one-woman show - a platform for me to share a collection of my own poems, songs and stories, but over the years it has developed into so much more.

I had to take a break from performing a number of years ago when I was admitted to psychiatric hospital. What followed was a series of 5 hospital admissions spanning 5 years, during which time, in between hospital admissions, I trained in stand-up comedy, re-wrote ‘Earth to Alice’, received critical acclaim for this new version of the show, was nominated for an award for ‘Best Spoken Word Show’ in The Saboteur Awards 2019, linked ‘Earth to Alice’ in with the Samaritans raising money and awareness of their work, re-wrote the show again as a 15-minute film adaptation for TV, and had the show commissioned by BBC Culture In Quarantine and streamed on BBC iplayer, where you can now view it. I am now working on writing a full TV series of ‘Earth to Alice’ expanding on the themes and characters in the show. (I told you it was exciting!!)

I have big dreams for where this story is going. I feel it is a story that needs to be told and shared with the world – A story about living on the margins, facing the looking glass, battling blank canvases, going down rabbit holes, pouring your heart out, swimming upstream and all the magical things in between the cracks where the imagined world and the everyday meet, but more than all that – it is a timely and uncompromising look into the challenges and prejudices many people face on the road to recovery from serious mental illness.

‘Earth to Alice’ has come a long way, and I am so grateful and excited to be reaching the next stage of bringing this story out into the world.

This August, I will be bringing the live stage show of ‘Earth to Alice’ to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for the very first time. This will be the first time I will perform ‘Earth to Alice’ outside of Northern Ireland and I am so excited to share this with the world.

The BBC film of ‘Earth to Alice’ is also still streaming on BBC iplayer. You can view it here: https://bbc.in/3AWxdCd

I am very proud of this film – it was all filmed by a local crew here in Belfast, and we are keen to put it into a number of film festivals to be seen by wider audiences.

In order for me to take this work to the next stage – to take my work outside of Belfast, perform my live show in Edinburgh and have the film seen at International film festivals, it is going to cost a lot of money. Each festival has a fee, and costs have been mounting up to the point where in order for me to get this work out into the world I have to ask for help. I hope you might consider supporting ‘Earth to Alice’ – there are a number of ways you can do this.

    - You can donate to this JustGiving Page

    - You can watch and share the film (https://bbc.in/3AWxdCd)

    - You can come and see the live show in Belfast or Edinburgh (dates will be announced soon)

    - You can let me know what you thought of the film and/or the live show

    - You can go for a cup of tea with me or just drop me a line – this new step in my career is exciting but scary, and I’m really appreciating the support of friends right now.

Every little helps, and every small kindness is deeply appreciated.

Thank you so much for all of the good vibes and support shown to me at every point along the road with this epic project – from Sarah who first coined the phrase ‘Earth to Alice’ back when I was a teenager, to Stephen who believed in this show and encouraged this film to get made.. and everyone in between.. I hope I do you all proud in Edinburgh.. and beyond.. and I hope this inspires you to live out your dreams too, despite all the obstacles we all face. Onwards and upwards!

    Love Alice
