Story
Dr Ashley Roberts, Consultant Clinical Radiologist and his team have taken a concept, initially from Taiwan, modified in the USA but now re-engineered in Cardiff and adapted to fit a number of applications relevant to the current Covid19 Pandemic.
During intubation, endoscopy and other lifesaving procedures patients regularly exhale or cough creating an aerosol effect. Covid19 has made this impact a danger to front line nurses, doctors and healthcare workers.
The team refined the design and has had manufactured a small number of containment boxes (The Intubation Box) which have gone through some hospital trials with great success. The boxes have contained the spread of the infectious virus and after a deep clean, in a manner approved by the hospital, are ready for re-use. Boxes are already being delivered and trialled at a number of Hospital Trusts throughout Wales.
Constraints with NHS funding has necessitated securing private funding from family, friends and colleagues. However, as the project is progressing rapidly, further funding is now a matter of urgency to supply more of these units, in order to protect NHS frontline workers.
With sufficient funds these units can be supplied to many other Health Trusts in the UK, thus potentially saving lives nationwide.

It’s an ongoing project, so we’ve registered as a Charity and have opened a Just Giving page to continue raising much needed funds to help save lives of frontline NHS professionals. Please share with family and friends to keep patients and staff safe as they carry on with life saving procedures through this Covid 19 Pandemic and beyond.

4 years agoSo far, the generosity of individual donations and donations from several Rotary Clubs in South Wales and the East Midlands are making this project a success. This support is appreciated by the whole Team. In addition to many hospitals within the Welsh NHS Trusts, Intubation Boxes have recently been delivered to Leicester Royal Infirmary. The next roll out will be to Newcastle and Edinburgh and the Team, based in South Wales, are looking forward to the feedback from their colleagues in England and Scotland. Please share the JG page for our NHS.

4 years agoThe Medical Paper The manuscript for ‘Frontline Gastroenterology’ by Dr RobMcleod, an ENT surgeon, Dr Ashley Roberts - Consultant GI Radiologist at UHW and Neil Warren from WIMAT, Cardiff University, was published on 13th June online and the paper version should be out shortly. This paper evaluates the EBOX during ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography) and EUS (Endoscopic Ultrasound). This is a landmark step in the life of the project. 16 boxes delivered to NHS hospitals throughout Wales are gradually being put into operation.
