WHAT IS SUS?
https://parktheatre.co.uk/whats-on/sus
Sus is a play that holds special significance to all of us at Dilated Theatre. Originally performed in 2013 at the Lion and the Unicorn Theatre, almost 10 years later the play continues to have pressing and devastating relevance. The themes of police violence, institutional oppression, and the lack of accountability are just as prevalent now as they were when the play was first performed in 1979.
It is also of special significance to us as Barrie Keeffe, the writer of the play and friend of Dilated Theatre, passed away in 2019. This is the first production of his work we have staged since his death, and through this play, we hope to honour his worth, his creativity, and his legacy.
WHO ARE WE?
http://dilatedtheatre.com
Dilated Theatre is an award-nominated company, which strives and aims to create work of such focused intensity that people are left feeling that they themselves have been complicit in the act.
Where possible we will use society’s events; social, cultural, economic or political to engage in a dialogue with our work; or if the spotlight needs to be pointed on a subject we feel needs attention.
By the production of high-quality work we aim to bring theatre that is exciting, visceral, that connects to all communities; and is driven by a passion to create and cause a shift in the availability of theatre to a wide and diverse audience base.
We are performing at the Park Theatre in London, between the 21st of September and the 15th of October. If you believe in the aims of this play, and want to assist us in our goal of educating audiences, starting conversations on the difficult subject matter, and encouraging people to think about the rules and biases they live under, then now you can!
WHY FUND US?
We are attempting to raise an additional £1000 to assist with the production and management of our production of SUS. We believe in this show, and the importance and value it can have, and we are asking for your help to extend this project and go even further to spread awareness and the impact of this show. If you have the means, you believe in us and you’re willing to support us a bit beyond the price of your ticket, please consider giving us what you can.
WHAT WILL THE MONEY GO TOWARDS?
The production has been privately funded, and we are working with an amazing team who can make a little bit of money go a long way. However, having additional funds available helps our production both ensure our goals and go beyond them to achieve new targets to bolster our vision of the show.
The two primary areas the money will go towards will be outreach and sustainability. This will include paying for Q&A sessions for teachers and students to come to see the show as part of their educational experience, in order to answer questions about the play, production process, and the themes and history that the show addresses.
We will also be able to offset ticket costs for economically disadvantaged groups. It is important to us to bring this play to all audiences, regardless of experience with theatre or economic pressure. The cost of living crisis affects us all, and we want to ensure that our show should not be kept from audiences due to a financial barrier. Support from you means we can provide tickets for free to audiences.
We will also be about to focus on making our production as environmentally friendly as possible. Shows like this one can take up a great deal of energy, but there are methods that can reduce this. The money will allow us to primarily draw our prop and costume sourcing from second-hand usage, pay for the labour of organising the post-show life of the materials used and allow us to work with a trusted carbon offset program to account for the energy we have generated.

As relevant today as the day it was first performed, SUS is seared into the memory of those who experience it. We're excited to be returning to this production after our critically acclaimed run ten years ago, and we want your help to make it bigger than ever!
