Story
As result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the production may be showcased in a different way to comply with the tier system that might be in place. However, the show will go on! This project will give children and communities who are underrepresented in theatre, the much needed space and opportunity to express their feelings after a very challenging year, while raising awareness of individuals who have made important contributions to British history.
Musical theatre gives children an opportunity to express themselves, be exposed to difficult situations and how to manage these situations in a creative way. Through the art of dance, acting and music they learn new forms of communication in a range of unique ways. Exposure to the arts can help improve children’s academic performance and develop their self-expression and social skills.
I am passionate about musical theatre because I love music and it is a powerful platform to tell stories that are not always easy to tell without judgement or offending. Musical theatre makes you form a connection with people and impact their lives by conveying the message through the emotion of the songs. Evadne Bygrave, Artistic Director.
The production is based on Dido Belle, one of Britain's first aristocrats of African descent, the daughter of Maria Belle, an enslaved African and Sir John Lindsay, a British naval officer. Dido grew up as gentle lady at Kenwood House under the guardianship of her great uncle, William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield. In this production, Dido is transported to Jamaica to meet Jamaican heroes who helped bring an end to the horrific transatlantic slave trade.

4 years agoDear Supporters We are really excited about the PM's statement on easing lockdown and we hope this enable us to deliver live performances in August. However, animation will still play an important part of the production, which requires further funding. We will be starting another Crowdfunding campaign that will be added to the funds we have already received from you. Apologies in advance if you receive another request, as many of you have made anonymous donation. So please ignore or you can share the link with family & friends. Thank you

Dido Belle Theatre Project 2021
4 years agoDear supporters Covid-19 has severely affected the arts world, when we need it most. There is still a lot of uncertainty around when and how the arts will be showcased in the "new norm" and if live performances will be permitted. We are exploring the use of animation to help tell Dido's story, while still giving the children an opportunity to be involved in performing arts next summer. As supporters here is a preview of the "Dido Through the Looking Glass - The Musical" poster 2021where she travels to Jamaica, painted by Tricia Palmer.
