Story

Gavin ran 25 marathons around the U.K and Ireland in the space of a month this spring, as a person living with type 1 diabetes.

What were all the marathons for?!

The League of DiAthletes hosts "T1D Heroes" currently based across Australia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, France, Ghana, Greece, India, Kuwait, Pakistan, Romania, Uganda, the UK and the USA - 6 continents - who each live with type 1 diabetes and go the extra mile to bridge gaps in healthcare by passing on their personal experiences.

In July 2018 we will bring these inspiring ambassadors together to London for a training delegation to share our diverse, global experiences and innovate grassroots workshops and activities to further support local type 1 diabetes networks around the world. Type 1 diabetes education is essential and it needs to improve by better relating to patients and their needs, which comes from more uplifting forms of engagement. The Heroes will enhance their education and produce practical methods of diabetes workshops & community events as a core outcome.

Far too often people around the world living with type 1 face misconceptions, multiple forms of discrimination, poor levels of communication concerning their health responsibilities and emotional struggles in acceptance, where type 1 has the highest average incidence of mental health related issues of all chronic illnesses - and all of these negatives should not be the case. We are capable of achieving any goal in our lives with the right education, resources and attitude, and we can live our lives to the fullest with diabetes. Let's help make this the case for everybody, wherever they are in the world.

The marathons will further aim to support the advocacy campaign for people living with type 1 diabetes around the world by T1International

'Some approximations say that more than 40 million people around the world live with type 1 diabetes. A large proportion of people with diabetes live in places with inadequate healthcare, which means there are likely hundreds of thousands of people (or more) facing death due to lack of insulin.'

We believe in a world where everyone living with type 1 diabetes - no matter where they live - has everything they need to survive and achieve their dreams.
