Story
"I want to help fight all the silly cells" - Declan, 2024
I will be doing a 'Double Bungee Jump' (Front Jump and Back-Facing Jump) at the UK Bungee Centre in Reading on Sunday, 20th October to raise any funds possible for the Unmask Cancer Charity.
Having such an in-depth, personal relationship with Jo and Casey, as well as being able to have a hand in the charity event prep, has allowed me to see a different side to charity work and see the exact operations required to pull off the events the way they do.
I'm hoping to raise around £150+ for the charity to help put on more events and help increase the efforts required to reach their charitable aims which support people going through cancer treatment right now, but also their family and surrounding loved ones. Unmask Cancer understand first-hand what a cancer diagnosis feels like for the patient, but also the lasting impacts a diagnosis has on the surrounding loved ones who have to endure the consequences of a diagnosis.
In June 2022, I was introduced to and met Jo, and introduced to the inside world of Unmask Cancer, by Casey.
In November 2017, Jo was 32 and found a lump. After being checked by a doctor, and having a biopsy, in December just before Christmas, Jo was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer with a Grade 3 tumour meaning it was the fastest growing form with 3 young children at home - Casey (14), Milan (13), and Kyle (11).
Unmask Cancer was set up in 2018 after the founder, Jo, was diagnosed at 32 with breast cancer. After seeing all the gaps in the system where people are in an extreme life-or-death situation, Jo decided to take this as her opportunity to change the cancer world.
From 2018-2023, whilst operating as a non-profit organisation, Unmask Cancer raised £30,480.26 for other cancer charities.
The new year of 2024 was the beginning of Unmask Cancer's journey into being an officially registered charity yet they are still fundraising for other people and charities in need of donations.
At this moment in time, I have attended 2 Charity Balls and 2 Football Tournaments and will be attending the 'Bring Back The 80s' Ball in September. Seeing all the hard work put into these events, as well as everything else yet to be revealed by the team, made an impact.
That's why I have decided to use this opportunity to turn a gift to me, into something special for me, and the charity.
Unmask Cancer Aims as A Registered Charity Include:
- Developing More Chemotherapy Kits
- The Introduction of Kids Chemotherapy Kits
- Aid Toward Travel Expenses
- Funding Towards Support Bras or Single/Double Prosthesis Breasts After Surgery
- Providing Wigs/Real Hair Wigs to Patients
- Counselling and Long-Term Mental Health Effects of Treatment to All Affected by Diagnosis
