Story
if everyone who sees this donates just £1, it will soon add up.........Sean Hasler has worked for Cablesheer (Asbestos) Ltd since 2010 and as well as being a valued member of our staff is a good hearted, funny and intelligent man. Working his way up from Asbestos Operative to Supervisor, he then progressed further to become an Assessor. Fit and outgoing, Sean was always at the gym, loves all kinds of sport and enjoys the company of his friends and colleagues.
Then bam – his life changed in an instant........In March 2014 aged just 32, Sean had a stroke whilst he was at work which has affected the right side of his brain. Although he was taken straight to hospital, the stroke was quickly followed by further clots in the arteries of both of his lower legs and in one of the arteries in his heart. The Surgeons attempted to remove the blood clots in his legs but this failed on the left and he had to have a left through knee amputation. Although the right was more successful he also had to have part of his right foot amputated as well. Following further investigations on his heart the Doctors found that Sean was suffering from weakening of the heart muscle, a condition called cardiomyopathy and this is what had caused his blood to clot.
Sean is doing really well coping with his amputations and keeps himself upbeat even though he has undergone further surgeries since this happened. As well as the amputations the stroke has also left Sean with limited use of his left hand and arm.
Needless to say, Sean has had to make major adaptations to his life, not least his job. Returning to Cablesheer in 2016, instead of being out on site, Sean is now office based using a computer for the majority of his work. Whilst most people may have suffered from severe depression and self-pity, Sean has picked himself up more than once and remains positive and focussed in getting back on his feet quite literally! He is persevering with the NHS prosthetics and has started to come to terms with his new role in an office environment – not at all what he is used to or where he thought he would be. At first with the use of a wheelchair, Sean is now just beginning to walk through the office to reach his desk. A major achievement and something we all take for granted. He has taken his first visit to his local High Street wearing his prosthetics and managed completely on his own, a major achievement dodging in between shoppers and pedestrians, like all of us, in a complete hurry !
Whilst the hospitals and staff do their best, they are restricted by funding as to what can be allocated to Sean to help him and so only the basics are covered by them. Due to the type of amputation that Sean has had, state of the art prosthetics are not available on the NHS, to start with Sean would need a knee joint which comes in at around £60,000. There are so many things we could buy to help support Sean and ease his life just a little like an electric wheelchair, an exerciser for his left hand and arm to help rebuild the muscle, a rowing machine to help develop his core strength, a slow cooker to help him in the kitchen. All these would aid his independency but obviously aren't covered on the NHS. It's so frustrating when you can see what is available but out of reach unless you have the funds to buy privately. To get going we would like to help raise enough money for Sean to purchase equipment that will really help him. If you feel you would like to help, please donate to this Just Giving page.
