Story

We all sleep under the same stars

Running a marathon has been on my bucket list for many years and I have finally decided to have a go! On October 6th I will be running along the southeastern shore of Loch Ness from Fort Augustus to Inverness. This challenge cannot be done without a fundraising effort-otherwise what is it all for?

I recently read a book 'The Bee Keeper of Aleppo'; a story of a refugee family who encounters one tragic loss after another trying to flee to safety from Syria. The book speaks for itself but left me feeling sad, powerless, angry and ashamed.

I wanted to find out about how I could help, even in a very small way; and most importantly to find out what was going on in my local community to support refugees. That's when I came across Malvern Welcomes, a charity based in Worcestershire. All I can say are these guys are amazing, inspirational, fantastic and dedicated. I initially made contact with Ruth who explained about the resettlement program that they have campaigned tirelessly for. To re-home one family in Malvern costs £9000 pounds; however, they aim to fund-raise double this to make the transition a bit easier. These people, our fellow human beings have endured such terrible losses, their homes, family members, their countries; I cannot even begin to imagine the pain and heartache that this causes.

Reading about what this charity aims to achieve has made me reflect on what is important for all of us to live with a sense of worth in the world. To feel safe, secure, loved and accepted. £500 pounds seems like such a small amount, but it is something. I am asking you to help me to help this fantastic cause. It will be an absolute pleasure and privilege to fund-raise for this charity. I urge you to click on the link to their website Malvern Welcomes and look at the many ways we can all help, do our bit, support our fellow human beings.

A beautiful poem written by one of the children that they gave a talk to sums it all up- 'we all sleep under the same stars'
