Story
David Gould has been at the heart of the Shakespeare Institute community for the past 35 years. Losing him on Thursday 8 April, after a short and sudden illness, shocked us all. As anyone who met David knows, he was among the kindest, gentlest, most quietly supportive people, and we want to pay tribute to his life and work with a memorial in the Shakespeare Institute gardens. We are collecting money here for a memorial, with any additional funds to be split among the charities that David nominated in his will: Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Guide Dogs Association for the Blind, People's Dispensary for Sick Animals, and The Donkey Sanctuary.
David's funeral will take place on Monday 26 April at 4pm UK time. The hearse will drive past the front of the Shakespeare Institute on Church Street at approximately 3.15pm. All are welcome, socially distanced along the street. The service will also be livestreamed. Please email Rebecca White at r.t.white@bham.ac.uk for the link.
'One touch of nature makes the whole world kin' - thank you David for bringing us together for so many years through your magnificent work in the Shakespeare Institute gardens.

4 years agoA further message from Rebecca: 'David’s friend Margaret wanted me to let you know that David’s ashes were scattered this afternoon (14 May) at the garden of remembrance at Canley near Coventry. They had a poem reading and chose a beautiful spot under a beech tree where the crocuses and daffodils bloom, just like the area that David tendered in the inner gardens by the gazebo. We will think of him when the daffodils bloom there each year and the beech tree comes into leaf. Thanks again to everyone for their support.' - Rebecca x

4 years agoDear all, thank you so much for your donations and your messages of love for David. Reading through them has warmed our hearts. It didn't surprise us at all that we quickly exceeded the target set for the memorial. Erin is in the process of arranging for the excess money to be split among David's nominated charities - we will let you know when that is complete. We are also working now on organising David's memorial in the garden and will send you more details, and photos, when they are available. Thank you again. In the meantime, we are

David was such an asset to the Institute and I worked with him for 17 years. We always used to talk about gardening and horse racing and I will miss his kindness and laughter.

What a man. The Institute garden won't be the same without his gentle guardianship, or his never-changing 'y'alright'. We'll miss you, David.
