I've raised £2500 to fund new equipment for Ward 67 at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, by running the Dublin Marathon in memory of my mum, Marie Gallagher.

In June 2017 my Mum, Marie, was admitted to the Neurology department at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with a very rare brain disease which, to date, has no known cure. The news was devastating but the medical team within ward 67 done their best to keep my Mum as upbeat as possible. The levels of care she received, from the nurses in particular, within the ward was incredible. The team were undoubtedly stretched to their limit by the amount of patients they had in their care. Nonetheless, they ensured that all of Mum's needs were taken care of and there was never a hint of negativity from any of them. The team in ward 67 are a credit to the NHS.
In October 2017 my Mum was allowed to return home to receive palliative care from her family and friends. On the 29th October 2017 my Mum passed away, surrounded by her family. There are no words that can come close to expressing the pain and loss we have endured. My Mum was the most incredible, selfless person you could ever have met. This is why on Sunday 27th October 2019, two years to the day my Mum left us; myself along with my uncle Brian, auntie Louise and auntie Fiona will run the Dublin Marathon in her memory. We felt it would be nice to raise money in memory of my Mum and could think of no better beneficiary than the ward that treated her so well during her final weeks. All money raised will be put towards upgrading equipment within the ward and ensuring the team there can continue to provide unrivaled care for all of the patients and families who rely on them so much. My Mum was an NHS Midwife and we are sure she would be delighted with our choice.
