Story
STUDIO FIRE
There was a fire in the unit opposite Darren Wheeler’s newly set up studio which burnt out his unit as well. He has lost all his tools and equipment and has nothing left to create his wonderful sculptures and platters. Let’s raise money to help him get new tools and lathes so he can continue to amaze us with his work and enthusiasm.
His work has been described as “revealing the Art of Nature itself”. A style of art which can never be mass-produced, each piece unique to the particular burr and growth being sculpted.
Many of have followed Darren and loved watching him get the new studio set up and instal his wonderful Big Bertha, lots of videos here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEP3V5v4hRj6mFFD5PgisEw

6 years agoLess than three weeks after that fire that destroyed Darren’s workshop and all his tools, equipment, wood and work in progress we have managed to get him up and working for the Open for Art launch at Sculpture by the Lakes today. It is all down to the help and generosity of everyone who has donated here; the response has been incredible and Darren has been overwhelmed by all your support. We have also set up an auction page on Facebook - feel free to add a bid! https://m.facebook.com/groups/2298351730439256?tsid=0.6769627232239751&source=result

6 years agoWe are working to get Darren set up in a studio at Sculpture by the Lakes and attached are photos of progress. We will concrete the floor next week and hopefully instal a new lathe Darren has just acquired the week after. All the funds raised are going to Darren for tools and equipment, not for the conversion of the studio, and he has also been offered some amazing wood to get started. The plan is to try and have him set up and working in time for the launch of Open for Art on 11th May - a bit of a tight deadline but we are on it!

6 years agoThis has been absolutely incredible! The response to the plea to help Darren has been amazing and he is totally overwhelmed. Thank you to everyone who has contributed, you have turned a day of tragedy into one of hope. I have also set a Facebook group called Darren Wheeler’s New Studio Auction where this stunning platter shown here is Lot#1. It is a much treasured piece I bought a few years ago but feel that it would serve a better purpose raising money to help Darren. There will be lots items added so please join the group.
