Schools and education

Story

Most of us take our education for granted, however, in Sudan there are still 3.2 million children between the ages of 6 and 16 who do not get the chance to go to school. I recently spent 11 days in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, taking the opportunity to visit and help out an impoverished primary school, run by the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco, which provides education and social development services to 420 children between the age of 4 and 12.The experience was so rewarding that I will be returning to the school at the end of this year, and so I will be fundraising until then. All the students are victims of the civil war in South Sudan and have had to flee from the South, most make the dangerous journey on foot. Around half of the children are orphans. The children live with their families in local slums or in the 'Mayo' refugee camp. I met families in the slums surrounding the school and witnessed for myself the poor living conditions, as well as meeting several people suffering from malaria. Many of those who are orphans have to sleep on the streets, living in groups to stay safe. Many are deeply wounded, scared, sick, and above all very hungry. However, the school offers a place where they can learn, have fun and escape from their problems. The Sister's provide the uniform and schooling materials as well as 1 basic meal a day. Previously I ended up raising £1500 allowing me to take over 85kg worth of stationery. Over there, I bought further educational materials, 900 bars of soap, 10 kg of sweets, 450 packets of biscuits and playground equipment. I agreed with the nuns that the rest of the money should be used to equip the school with text books for all the year groups as they currently have no teaching resources. Since the trip I have been to a primary school to raise awareness, and I have continued to receive donations in support of this project. This time funds raised will buy stationery, basic medical/sanitation supplies and the rest will be spent on a larger project, improving the facilities (re-painting, storage, desks, etc.). Your generosity will make a huge difference! Thank you in advance.
