    Story

Rushcliffe AC is committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of its athletes. As part of this commitment, the club has decided to support the Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) charity by fundraising to host and subsidise a CRY heart screening event. Cardiac screening is recommended for any young person taking part in competitive sport.

Who are CRY? Since its formation in 1995, CRY has been working to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD). Every week in the UK at least 12 young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions. In 80% of cases of YSCD, there are no prior symptoms of a heart defect, but simple, non-invasive heart screening can dramatically reduce the frequency of YSCD. This screening is currently unavailable on the NHS. Screening has been shown to lead to an 89% reduction in young sudden cardiac deaths. Everyone who is screened by CRY also helps to further CRY’s research efforts – increasing our understanding of YSCD and ultimately helping to reduce the number of YSCD.

In order to fundraise for the CRY heart screening event Rushcliffe AC coaches Danny and Graham (combined age approaching 110!) will attempt the classic Bob Graham Round (BGR) on the weekend 24/25th June. What is the BGR? ….a 66 ish mile run (or in our case “crawl” ) in the Lake District across 42 of England’s highest mountains …. that’s over 27,000 feet of ascent (think in terms of the height of Mt Everest). The challege is to try to complete this epic endeavour …hopefully in under 24 hours! The majority of attempts at the BGR end in failure but we have spent the last 12 months lugging our ageing bodies over the Lakeland fells in every conceivable type of weather and conditions, notwithstanding a couple of near death experiences!, to prepare ourselves for the BGR….wish us luck and please please support us :)

9pm 12 Aug, BGR attempt 2! Weeks after coming close to hypothermia this time we were met with a rare heatwave in the Lakes so we knew we we in for another tough time. Sadly Graham had to retire after 9 hours due to injury . Danny carried on through the burning heat with his pacers and road crew doing a great job of keeping him hydrated and tending to his badly blistered feet,… finally completing the BGR in the early hours of Sunday. That’s it…..it’s been an epic adventure with brilliant support both on the round and our sponsors -thank you ❤️

Friday evening we set off for our BGR attempt despite uncertain weather. We were moving well until being absolutely battered on leg 2 for 4 hours - 1 km up on the sky, in the dark, with rain, fog and strong winds. Despite losing time we set off on leg 3 hoping for better weather which never materialised so reluctantly had to concede defeat around half way. We gave it our best shot but failed. Eternal thanks to our awesome support and to all of you who have generously sponsored us and help us smash our fundraising target. Will we be back?
