Story

Hi I’m Dan Wilson, and I’m raising money to go and volunteer in Cambodia, run in partnership between Redruth School and Camps International. I will be going in 2021, just after my GCSE’s, and will be providing assistance to a local community. We go to Cambodia because it is a relatively undeveloped country, located in Southeast Asia. In the 70’s, there was a mass genocide (Pol Pot regime), and the effects are still being felt today. Over 50% of the population is under 25, and this has left the country without important skills such as teachers and doctors. We go there to try and help them. I will be helping in three main ways: the community, the wildlife and the environment. In Cambodia, very few children go to school, since the children have to help their families in the fields. When I go, I will try to help by doing things such as building or improving school buildings and helping to build school kitchens so that the children get a good education and a hot meal every day. Deforestation to make way for palm oil and fields is also a problem there, so while we are out there we will try to reforest some areas by planting saplings. I will also try to help the wildlife, especially the marine wildlife, by doing beach cleans, then trying to turn the litter collected into something useful. For example, turning the flip flops found into keyrings so the local community can sell them. But I can’t do any of this without your help. Thank you.
