Story
My name is Daniel Durkin and alongside Una Burnand and Jessica Honeywell, we make up the 45 Degrees Theatre Company. We are currently trying to raise money to take the play "A-level playing field" to the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival with your help!
This play is based in a London day school where a group of ‘friends’/students in their last year are assigned to a classroom for the time between their preliminary and final exam: isolation.
The play approaches students’ stress levels, the sheltered lives students are forced to live, society’s main issues with the higher education system and human relationships. The idea that they are 'caged' in this isolation classroom makes it even more apparent how little these very highly educated students know about the world outside of their textbooks.
The students struggle their way through this real-time hour long period, and envelop the audience in the smaller and larger scale ‘drama’ of their lives. The fast paced comedy mixed with patches of sincerity and confessions by the students is perhaps the play's strongest asset, as it is this which engenders an eerie reliability to a modern school exam isolation room. Moreover, the fact that it is performed by students who are going through this exact stress currently, only adds to the play's authenticity.
The concepts it approaches are relevant to all members of an audience through its capability to understand human behavior and relationships through the eyes of students. The beautiful irony is that students who are still in full time education are able to teach the world about how to deal with issues that they themselves are yet to face.
