Story

Singing for Breathing supports people with chronic lung conditions and breathlessness through singing. After being diagnosed with asthma in 2020 after a virus, I've learned how to maximise my breathing through rudiments and musical fun with the Royal London Hospital's Singing for Breathing group, online and in Stratford.

But, we need help with funding to continue to provide this support for the group. And so, I am doing an around the world dance marathon to raise money. Please donate!

You might notice the page has changed - that's because I made a mistake with the fundraiser due date. DON'T WORRY if you already donated, your contribution has gone to Singing for Breathing RLH safely. A huge THANK YOU to everyone who has supported and encouraged this fundraiser already! -Ruth

This event will take place on 2nd July 2023 (assuming I'm well and it's safe to do so!). You're welcome to join in with any of the classes or with Just Dance from home!

Around the World Dance Marathon

I'll be dancing around the world (from my home) by taking a 30m dance class from each continent, back to back.

Europe. Ballet. Originating from Italy and developed in France, I'll start the day with a classical ballet class of rudiments at the barre.

Africa. Yamama. This is a traditional masked dance form from Guinea in West Africa. It is often done as a rites of passage with mothers and daughters.

Asia. Kathak. A major form of Indian classical dance, traditionally attributed to the Kathakars; traveling bards in ancient northern India. This is a percussive class using ghungroo (bells around the ankle).

Australinea. Ori Tahiti. Traditional dance from the Islands of Tahiti. I'll be learning Haula, a dance about embracing our differences.

North America. Tap. The second percussive class is the American art form from the USA, developed alongside jazz music with strong African American roots.

South America. Cumbia. popular in Colombia with a folkloric style from the Caribbean coast, cumbia music is played on drums, flutes, and percussion instruments of African and indigenous origins.

Antarctica. Wildcard. Antarctica isn't know for dancing, so I'll end with a 1 hr game of Just Dance. Donate £10 and you can select a track from the song lists for Just Dance 2019 or 2021, by mentioning it in the comments when you donate.

Thanks for your help!
