Paramedic Dan Holt this week had a needle stick injury & was assaulted whilst working as a paramedic. Unfortunately the needle had been used by 3 people who have hep c & hiv. Because of this Dan has had to go on some very strong medication which makes you sick & gives you diarrhoea dealing with this as you can imagine is very stressful with the potential of what he may have caught as well as the stress he can't work. Dan is on a bank contract with his trust (basically a zero hours contract) and as such is not entitled to sick pay so will be down by about £1000 on wages as he generally does 7-8 shifts a month and has done for 12minths plus. He is a single father to a four year old. We have looked in to helping the shortfall by getting money from his union but could take up to a year to get money also the ambulance service benevolent fund have said they have very little funds and it's very difficult to get money. Dan just needs help with paying his bills for at least one month. I just ask that you help a fellow colleague going through a difficult & stressful time who is in an unusual position because of a poor contract which does not pay sick pay and more importantly we do not know particularly in this job in the emergency services we don't know when or if we maybe in a similar situation one day please help.
