Story

The Old Coach Road is approximately 8km of unsealed unclassified county road in the parishes of St. John Castlerigg & Wythburn, Threlkeld and Matterdale. The road was used by the Romans to transport minerals from the Pennines to the west coast and was the main route from central Cumbria to the west in years to follow. Today, The Old Coach Road is enjoyed by all, with walker, cyclists, horse riders and mechanical propelled vehicle users sharing the access then rightfully to be rewarded with the views it has to offer across the valley. The Old Coach Road was significantly damaged during Storm Desmond in 2015 with the excessive rainfall leaving the road heavily scared in several places. Subsequent storms have left it even more scarred. The 'authorities' do not have the money to repair it, so Cumbria Trail Riders Fellowship would like to do that so all users can regain the use of this roadway for many years to come.
