Story
Updated story 22nd March 2021:
Thank you all so much for your generosity so far. However, with the recent news that Ashton will have to have part of his leg amputated, he needs us all now more than ever!
We started this page with a target of £500, which was reached very quickly, showing how much support there is for Ashton. To ensure Ashton gets the best prosthetic available and to enable him to continue his passion to play sport and to be as active as possible, we are now looking to achieve a new target of £20000.
Ashton is a truly inspirational young boy, who is showing huge courage, bravery and positivity during these difficult times. Any donation will help Ashton with the journey ahead as we all look to offer him the support that he needs and deserves.
We are all with you Ashton!
To show our support for our young Academy goalkeeper, Ashton Hulme, a number of our Academy Staff will be attempting a sponsored run which will take in the Stadiums of each of our local clubs, Crewe Alexandra, Stoke City and Port Vale. As well as acting as a fundraising event for Ashton and his family, this run will also mark our appreciation towards our near neighbours, Stoke City and Port Vale, who have been extremely supportive towards Ashton throughout this difficult period.
Coaches Lee Bell, Sam Pettitt, Ryan Dicker and Jonny Barber will be joined by Assistant Manager Kenny Lunt, First Team Coach Alex Morris, First Team Physiotherapist Steve Philips, our Lead Sport Scientist, Tom Ryan as well as Lead Academy Physiotherapist Tass Amiridis. Academy Manager, Aidan Callan will also be taking part in the run.
Manager Dave Artell, U18s Coach Michael Jackson, Foundation Lead Coach Matt Freeman and Head of Coaching Will Ryder will be cycling the challenge.
The run, taking place on Sunday 23rd May, will see the team start at the Alexandra Stadium, on to the Bet 365 Stadium, on to Vale Park and finally return back to the Alexandra Stadium. The planned route is approximately 35 miles.
In December 2020, 12 year old Ashton was diagnosed with a rare type of bone cancer in his fibula bone in his calf, known as Osteosarcoma. Ashton is curently going through Chemotherapy treatment and is showing huge courage, bravery and positivity. Ashton has a huge passion for football. He is a talented goalkeeper here at Crewe Alexandra and is a big Stoke City fan. Ashton has a terrific, bubbly personality and he is a happy, energetic and caring young boy who leaves an impression with everyone he meets.
Academy Manager, Aidan Callan said ‘The support that has been shown towards Ashton from the Footballing community has been unbelievable. Ashton has received kind messages of support from literally all over the world and I know that the support shown gives him a massive boost’
‘As a club we were devasted to hear the news back in December. Ashton is such a well liked young boy and gets on with all the coaches and staff here at Crewe. In addition to the support we have shown Ashton and his family, we decided to do something a bit different, which is where the idea of the sponsored run came from. We just want to do our bit, together with the numerous people currently fundraising by taking part in #marchinmarch and #getfitforashton. It has been overwhelming seeing so many people on social media getting involved.’
