Story
I'm looking to raise up to £30,000 for the Cletwr community cafe and shop in Tre'r Ddol, West Wales. https://cletwr.com/
Cletwr is a community asset, run by the community, for the community. It comprises a convenience store and cafe for locals and visitors/passing trade, in an award winning eco building, as well as being the hub for a wide range of other services (including a fuel syndicate, art gallery, knit and natter group, gardening group, community events, children's activities).
Cletwr is run by a fantastic team of staff and volunteers. Only staff -all local to the area- take a wage out of the business, and any surplus income is reinvested in Cletwr and other community activities.
We provide a safe, warm communal meeting space and essential services in an isolated rural area. We are so proud of what we have achieved here over the past 12 years, taking on a redundant fuel station and buildings, and creating a hub for locals and visitors. Public sector services are facing closure, down sizing and centralisation -this all has a disproportionate impact on rural commmunities. Spaces such as Cletwr are therefore even more essential in the current economic climate.
However, recent years have not been kind, and we are asking for your help to secure the future of this business.
We've been hit by Covid, massive electricity bills, 20% inflation, large increases in minimum wage, increases in the cost of stock, and wanting to keep our services affordable for the local community.
Storm Darragh was about the last straw for us and things have now reached a crisis point. In order to secure the future of Cletwr we need your financial help. We have applied for a community bank loan to help with the business moving forward but need some capital to keep things going in the meantime. Any contribution will help sustain the business and give us the breathing space to plan our next steps.
To paraphrase a larger retailer - "once it's gone, it's gone” and that would be such a loss.
You can help us secure Cletwr for the longterm -this wonderful bilingual space where connections are made, people are fed, and we all get to feel a bit better about our lives and those we have around us.
Diolch yn fawr iawn.
Helen.
