We are Clean Ocean Sailing
A local Cornish voluntary organisation that dedicates itself to cleaning our coasts and oceans sustainably under sail, raising awareness about ocean crisis.
We already collected over 55 tons of marrine rubbish and we are determined to carry out our vital mission. You are more than welcome to jump on board by supporting us!
Based in the idyllic Helford River in Cornwall, where founders Monika and Steve reside with their son Simon and Rosie the dog, Clean Ocean Sailing hold regular beach cleans down the river to the coves inaccessible by land, which are overflowing with plastic waste.
We are tackling the sea litter that is devastating the renowned beauty of the Cornish coastline in The Annette, our glorious 114-year-old schooner.
Isles of Scilly clean up expeditions
In 2022 we are again venturing to the Isles of Scilly, and we need your help! Our mission is to collect, record and recycle marine rubbish from the beaches, coves and coastline whilst raising awareness about ocean crisis. We aim to keep the Isles of Scilly and Cornish coast beautiful paradise.
Our first expedition was SUCCESSFUL! In February 2019, together with the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, we cleaned up five islands. We collected 39 dumpy bags of rubbish, weighing 3528 kg, which added up to an incredible 16,713 individual pieces of plastic picked up.
In 2020 we doubled the numbers. We removed over 7 tones of marine plastic rubbish from the sea during our two big clean up missions 10 Beaches 10 Days Challenge and Sailing and Paddling to Exeter Recycling Centre.
Last year we introduce Clean Ocean Sailing new program removing abandoned fiberglass wrecks from the Helford River, collecting in total of the year 9 tones which are 20 505 individual pieces of marine rubbish.
We finally reached a milestone by removing over 55 tons of plastic pollution from hard to reach parts of our shores.
Join us on a mission to protect wildlife, support biodiversity, and use less plastic in our everyday life.
Plastic pollution problem
Our UK coasts and seas are amongst the most diverse and beautiful on the planet, playing host to a wealth of wildlife including seals, dolphins, sharks, whales and turtles. Over half of the UK’s wildlife resides within our seas and many animals such as seabirds rely on them for their survival.
Plastic waste washes up and covers the beaches, threatening wildlife and polluting the area. A staggering 8 million tonnes of plastic waste enter the oceans every year, that’s equivalent to one garbage truck of plastic dumping into the ocean every minute. A staggering 100,000 marine mammals and 1 million seabirds die every year from plastic pollution – this needs to stop.
The ocean is in need of our help and we are only able to tackle marine plastics with your support!
Make a positive difference
By donating anything you can, you will be directly contributing to keeping this beautiful part of our country free from the plastic pollution that is devastating our oceans and wildlife.
You will also be allowing us to continue with our beach cleans, working with local people and businesses on finding solutions to the problem and keeping the issue of marine litter in the public eye.
For every £2 we will be able to pick up one bag full of plastic rubbish
For every £10 we will pick up 10 kg of waste
For every £30 we will drag out a deadly net from the beach
For every £60 we will collect one dumpy bag full of rubbish washed by the sea
For every £100 we will transport a tonne of marine litter under sail to the recycling center.
Please donate, share and spread the word to help us on our plastic free mission!
Thank you!
Love to the Planet! Love to the Ocean!

Clean Ocean Sailing
2 years agoWe are running a pilot project inviting people from all walks of life to join the fight against plastic pollution and look after their own mental health at the same time. On board and assisted by a therapist, participants learn the positive ways in which active participation can improve our wellbeing, whilst simultaneously contributing to the conservation of our marine environment. During sailing trips on our 115-year-old traditional wooden boat “Annie”, participants can experience sailing, kayaking, rowing, wild swimming and Beach Cleaning!

Clean Ocean Sailing
3 years agoWe can’t believe it’s happening! We have started to write a new chapter of Clean Ocean Sailing! Just a few hours ago, we re-launched our mothership - The Annette! It’s such an exciting moment for us, we are feeling so overwhelmed, happy and grateful. We spent early mornings and late nights waiting for the high tide, adjusting an almost-impossible, improvised and ambitious system of chains, pulleys, lift bags, a winch, a Land Rover, and of course our VW Cecil, to push our 55 ton wooden boat back into the water where she belongs.
