I am part of a team who own a double decker train which was built in 1949 by British Rail as an experiment which ended up lasting for 21 years. In 1950 British Rail stated that double decker trains were not viable in the U. K, and wouldn't ever run on the mainline again. This is what makes our coach very unique to this day. It was designed by Oliver Bulleid, on request by British Rail to try and resolve overcrowding in the cheapest possible way.
As a group we are currently trying to raise funds to assist with the restoration of the coach 13003 which is in a very sorry state as it has been left outside, uncovered since 1971 on private land in Kent.
We seriously need funds in order to replace locks, windows, re upholstery for seating. These jobs only just scratch the surface of restoring the coach back to a minimum of a static display and who knows with enough funding we could eventually get it onto a preservation line as a push /pull unit.
None of this is going to be possible without the backing and the generosity of the general public.
