Story
Thank you for taking the time to visit my Just Giving page and for making a donation to this cause...
The Paul Ridd Foundation was established by the brother and sister of Paul Ridd, Jayne Nicholls and Jonathan Ridd, following the avoidable death of Paul in 2009 in hospital. Paul's Story.
The Foundation's vision is to improve the healthcare of people with a learning disability in primary and secondary care. The Foundation has been instrumental in supporting the development of the Secondary Care Pathway for People with Learning Disabilities, the Learning Disability Care Bundle and its tools. They have developed the Learning Disability Logo and work tirelessly for this to be used and recognised across the UK. The Foundation is continually campaigning for the adoption of these initiatives, the appointment of Learning Disability Liaison Nurses and Learning Disability Champions in each hospital across Wales. The Paul Ridd Foundation supported the creation of two Learning Disability Liaison Nurse posts in ABMU Health Board in July 2016.
My name is Claire Jenkins and I am one of the Learning Disability Liaison Nurses in ABMU Health Board and I am based at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend. My role is to support people with a learning disability, their family and carers when they come into hospital. This involves highlighting and addressing risks for people with a learning disability, facilitating and advising on reasonable adjustments, ensuring that they receive appropriate healthcare and planning for a safe discharge. Also, I provide a link between Care Providers, Community Learning Disability Teams and other services to improve communication.
Myself (left), Joanne Edwards (right) LD Liaison Nurse Morriston Hospital with Jayne Nicholls (centre) of the Paul Ridd Foundation.
I have had the privilege of working with people with a learning disability for 33 years and feel passionate about the need to improve their experience and outcomes when admitted to hospital. I have a fear of heights so sky diving may not seem to be the best choice of activity to fund raise! However, I have chosen to jump (be pushed!!) out of a plane on June 23rd 2018 to raise funds to support the inspiring work of The Paul Ridd Foundation so that the vision of equitable healthcare for people with a learning disability can be achieved.
