Story
I have recently had the privilige to get to know Milton Samuels (Sam) and the Caribbean Sports Club he has been running in Sheffield for 30 years. The club is instrumental in engaging and keeping children off the street, out of trouble and away from street crime offering hope, happiness, positive role models and a deep sense of community, united in their love of sport, especially cricket. Sam is an amazing human being who has made The Caribbean Sports Club his life long passion, creating a vital hub in the community, supporting many hundreds of youngsters over the past 30 years with their love of cricket and football in particular. Sam believes in these children, their families, their potential and their futures. More than ever, our world needs people like Sam. The club is based in a tough part of the city and provides training and much needed sporting activities for Football, Cricket and Netball. Its players are young people mainly from the Pitsmoor, Burngreave and the Firth Park areas of Sheffield - some of the most challenged areas of the city with diverse communities from the West Indies, Pakistan and Bangladesh - indeed it's where my family made their home when they first moved to Sheffield in the early 1960s.The club has been recently advised that they must now have an electronic Score Box for the league in which they play (the Yorkshire Cricket Southern Premier League) - a new rule that dictates that all clubs must have live scoring if they are going to be allowed to compete. This needs to be in place by the middle of June. They have already raised £2,500 of the £5000 required, which is amazing given that so many of the families are on low incomes but they need the balance of another £2,500 within the next 3 weeks. I am committed to help them achieve this - can you help me?
Over the next three weeks, I intend to walk the distance of 93 miles to Egbaston Cricket Ground from my home in Sheffield to show that no distance is too great when we are united in our belief in the power that sports offers to unite communities. People of Asian and West Indian heritage are an important part of English cricket and by supporting me on this venture, we will be helping keep the club alive and creating the next Devon Malcolm, Mark Ramprakash, Nasser Hussain, Phil DeFreitas , Chris Lewis, Jofra Archer or Ravi Bopara.
Please sponsor me - even if it's only for a very small amount - every penny counts - I know what an amazing community you are. Many of you hop in and out of Ubers - £10 is probably less than the average price of one Uber - I met some of the children's dads, many of them are Uber drivers who have seen their incomes slashed. I know my network is a kind and generous one and I ask for your help in achieving this important goal and providing a scoreboard that will make such a difference to these young people and support the important work of good souls like Sam. Sponsor me today - and make a difference to the Sheffield Caribbean Club and all its children.
