Story

Éamonn’s Charity Chop

Dr. Éamonn Ó Ciardha, a well-known Irish history lecturer at Ulster University’s Magee campus, promises to get his haircut if we can help him raise money for charity. Fulfilling a longstanding promise to his mother to have his hair cut for her 80th birthday, a promise frustrated by Covid-19 pandemic, he is now aiming for her 81st birthday which takes place on the 09th of March 2021.

Éamonn last cut his hair almost thirty years ago to raise funds for Saint Luke’s Hospital (Dublin) in memory of his friend Aidan Connolly, who died from cancer aged 26. On this occasion, he and a number of his GAA club colleagues raised £7,500. With 2020 being such a difficult year for everyone, especially charities, Éamonn wishes to do his bit to help us all look forward to a better and brighter 2021. The Magee campus community including students and colleagues from across a number of departments are joining forces with Éamonn to support this fundraising campaign.

The funds that will be raised from ‘Éamonn’s Charity Chop’ will be split equally between four Derry charities to enable them provide vital services and supports to the local community:

• Foyle Down Syndrome Trust

• Foyle Hospice

• Foyle Search and Rescue

• Pink Ladies Cancer Charity

Donate whatever you can to ‘Éamonn’s Charity Chop’ to help him keep his promise to his mum and raise much need funds for our valued charity partners.
