Iʼve raised £1,345 to help build affordable homes in one of most deprived areas of the country

    Story

Everyone should have a home; a safe, secure place to be themselves. That’s why we are creating sustainable and affordable homes for up to 33 households in one of the most deprived areas of the country.

We are transforming derelict land into a vibrant neighbourhood with low-energy homes, shared facilities and gardens, recreational space, opportunities for inter-generational connections and a diverse intentional community grown from the local area.

This venture is special. It is run by local people to benefit local people. At least two-thirds of the residents are from Chapeltown and the group reflects the diversity of the local area in terms of age, ethnicity and low incomes.

We live in an area that has one of the lowest levels of income in whole the country (incomes are in the lowest 1.5%). Once the homes are built we know the development is sustainable, but we need to spend money now to pay for the land, the architect, the surveyor, the solicitor, etc.

    See www.chapeltowncohousing.org.uk for more information.

With many thanks for any help you can give,

    Peter

    ---------------
Chapeltown Cohousing is born out of the community. Local people are taking control of their own housing and working together to provide security for themselves and their families. Each household has their own home with everything they need, and they are also part of a cooperative community with shared facilities such as a laundry, play room, communal kitchen and dining room.

We will build super-insulated, affordable homes. Rent levels will be below 80% of market value and shared ownership means that people can buy what they can afford and rent the rest at an affordable rent.

We have reached a crucial stage. We have signed an exclusivity agreement with Leeds City Council that means we can purchase the site before it is offered elsewhere. The land costs about £250,000 – and every donation means we can provide more affordable homes and more shared community facilities.

We have, of course, also been busy raising loans to help us with the development finance. That’s the money we need in advance to pay for building the homes prior to getting money in once the residents move in - see www.chapeltowncohousing.org.uk/loanstock. Things are looking so good that we expect to be moved in by Christmas... ... 2018!! Thanks again, Peter and all the members of Chapeltown Cohousing.

Thanks to everyone who has donated. It will make a huge difference and we have been able to sign a contract with the council that secures the site for our development. This gives us 6 months to complete the purchase. We may not have reached out £20,000 target – that was probably a bit over-ambitious – but the amount we have raised really does help. Every pound that has been donated has a multiplier effect that reduces our need to borrow in the future. That means that a pound in the hand may well be worth two pound on the site.
