    Story

We are a pioneering childhood cancer support charity established in memory of Daniella Logun who passed away in 2016.

We offer holistic wellbeing support to Children with cancer & their families to enable them to cope with the changes, challenges, demands & issues of diagnosis.

Brain tumours or cancer in children are difficult to think about. However, clinical research shows that brain tumours are the biggest childhood cancer killers today and are responsible for 1 in 5 child cancer deaths in the UK. In the UK, 10 children are diagnosed of cancer every week.

This means that for 10 children and their families, life stops. School, family routines, weekend breaks, laughter, favourite places, fun things to do, outdoor activities, socialising, family favourites and other regular activities stops. Brain tumours are unlike other cancers. Children diagnosed with brain tumours suffer major motor disabilities within weeks of diagnosis. They will loose speech, sight, hearing, walking, learning (reading & writing) capabilities.

Life changes when a child is diagnosed with a brain tumour or cancer. Medical care takes over and the wellbeing (emotional, physical and spiritual) of the child and their family is inadvertently neglected. This neglect is detrimental to the child's physical, mental, emotional, spiritual health and wellbeing of the child, their siblings and parent carers.

7year old Ellie was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2020. She underwent brain surgery and suffered brain injury as a result of the brain tumour. She is back at school but has since suffered more disabilities including poor mobility and now uses a wheelchair. She now experiences learning difficulties, severe speech and language impairment and was forced to transfer from a mainstream school to a special school. Ellie is a beautiful, happy and fun loving girl who loves life and music. Due to the brain tumour diagnosis, she struggles to eat and drink safely and requires round the clock care by her parents and grandparents. Ellie experiences uncontrolled emotional outbursts and physical behavioural vehicles The sheer pressure and demands of providing Ellie's personal care, medication and social wellbeing needs isolated her family from the community and their social circles. The pressure mounted on her family and led to a family breakdown within a year.

7year old Shankeeth was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2018 that is being supported but the DLF. Shankeeth underwent brain surgery and suffered brain injury as a result of the brain tumour treatment. Shankeeth returned to school within a year of his diagnosis and treatment but his learning and development had changed permanently. Back at school, his special learning needs and developmental delays were not fully attended to and Shankeeth's parents were compelled to transfer him to a special school for safety. Due to the brain injury, Shankeeth has profound visual loss in the left eye, hearing loss in the left ear, poor mobility, sleep disturbances, partial paralysis and incontinence problems.

This is the reality for 80% of our children with brain tumours and life limiting cancers today. We offer nutritional and lifestyle support to educate parent carers on the value of healthier lifestyle choices to support the wellbeing of their children. We offer SEND support to guide parent carers to make informed decisions regarding their children’s educational options. We also offer professional counselling to support parent carers as well to cope through the emotional challenges of their new caring roles!

Without structured and accessible wellbeing support, children and their families are under greater pressure to meet their complex changing needs at every cost. Unsupported this wellbeing pressure can lead to longer term emotional distress, family breakdown, mental health . Parents and siblings become carers and neglect their own wellbeing. Our children become increasingly withdrawn as their medical health, independence, lifestyle, learning ability, mental, emotional, physical and spiritual wellbeing changes. Without immediate support, the sustained pressure can lead to longer-term trauma, family breakup, mental health challenges etc.

We are the Daniella Logun Foundation (DLF), and we launched 2weeks before the 2020 lockdown. We urgently need your help to raise funds to reach more children with timely emotional, practical and spiritual support when they need it.

Today, we partner with our local hospital and allied agencies to support more families with useful resources, food boxes, toys, prayer, advocacy and support, counselling and more.
