BANA MBATOSE BREAKFAST CLUB
Who are we?
Hello and welcome to Kurya Ndiko Uku CBO, Malawi
CBO means Community Based Organisation and Kurya Ndiko Uku means ‘This is the way to eat’. Hospitality and nutrition are at the heart of everything we do. We are a group committed to helping our local community overcome poverty. You will find us near Mzimba, northern Malawi. And we have friends all over the world.
At the end of the day, CBO members sit on the mat with a cup of tea and a bun and sort everything out.
The mat has got bigger and bigger….…… it now stretches from the CBO members in Kazomba to Newcastle, Glasgow, London, Manchester, Derby, Liverpool, Dublin, Derry, as well as to friends in the USA and Japan. We talk and share, swap photos and videos, raise awareness and money so that, little by little, pachoko pachoko, we move forward.
You can find out more at pachokopachoko.com where you can contact the UK members for further details.
What do we need?
One of the first projects that the UK team supported was our on-site nursery. We provide breakfast and quality early years education for the under 7s. Our nursery is called BANA MBATOSE which means “They are all ours”.
Samantha says "Hi!"
In the last year children everywhere have been adversely affected by the pandemic and child hunger has been a focus for us all. The Catholic Primaries in Newcastle know all about this and wanted to join together to help us.
With schools closed, our little ones have lost their only daily hot meal. Our children are now turning up to the school building- often with their older siblings- looking to be fed. This can mean up to 150 hungry tummies.
Here’s where you come in. Elizabeth and Flora have a message........
We want to set up BANA MBATOSE BREAKFAST CLUB which will feed the children from our local villages everyday. We have priced everything up and we think we can cover the project for £700 per school term.So our overall target is £3000 which will see us well into next year and help us plan ahead.Yewo chomene- thank you so much.
Thank you.
You are changing people’s lives
every day.

4 years agoMore from the team... “Yewo. We might even get new uniforms for them as they have no proper clothes. Parents are already contributing cleaning the surrounding and getting firewood. I went to the nursery school this morning at 7am and the parents were there already cleaning. 20 of them" “Thanks everyone. Here, the school year calendar has changed but for Bana Mbatose there will be no holidays as the children have nothing at home. We will be open as long as the funding is available. Our hearts are with you"

4 years agoFrom the team "The breakfast will be before they start class. At the end of class - sima or rice with meat and vegetables. If the budget allows, the little ones will have a dessert of a piece of fruit. An apple-these children have never seen an apple.” "As of yesterday we have in total of 80 children! Not enough rooms even if the CBO offices are used. The training centre will take some, but we have no chairs. They will have to sit on floors for now.We might have to have morning and afternoon classes because of space. This is amazing”
