Story
Jack was born in 2011 and due to numerous complications at birth he suffered HIE (starvation of oxygen to the brain) resulting in severe cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Jack is totally wheelchair bound and depends on us for all his cares. He has minimal head control, a floppy trunk, abnormal arm movements and very spastic legs. Jack is 100% peg fed as he has a poor swallow and no gag reflex. He requires regular suction to help deal with his secretions. Jack also suffers with epileptic fits. Despite all of Jack's complications he is a very happy boy who loves spending time with his younger sister and going to school. Jack has a carer at school as he has to wear a nasal pharyngeal airway. His muscles are very weak due to the cerebral palsy and therefore his tongue flops over his airway without the tube in place.
Jack's spastic legs mean he is unable to move them spontaneously and therefore I sleep alongside Jack and turn him several times throughout the night in the hope of making him more comfortable. Jacks hips are currently 75% out of their sockets so I have to ensure his posture is as
good as it can be at all times to prevent him being in pain.
I am trying to raise money to get Jack a stem cell transplant. This is not currently widely used in the U.K. and as Jack is currently not in a good position to travel to the USA I would like to collect and store stem cells in the hope that in the next year or so this procedure will become more available in the UK. I have been in contact with a UK based clinic who carry out collection and storage of stem cells. They charge an initial collection fee of just over £2,500 with an additional £100 pa being charged thereafter to continue to store them.
Although there is currently no cure for cerebral palsy, I have read numerous case studies where this procedure has reduced some of the complications caused by cerebral palsy and helped make the person more comfortable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
