Weʼve raised £1,404 to Support Stepping Stones Food Bank, serving Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie, SW Scotland

Funded on Wednesday, 3rd November 2021

    Story

Times are hard for many around the globe. Here in the UK, Food Bank use has increased dramatically since the start of the covid-19 pandemic. 600,000 more people relied on food banks in 2020/21 than in the previous year. Many people are struggling financially, due to the hardships associated with the pandemic.. Local Galloway foodbanks here have seen greatly increased use also.

In order to help those in need, *I will walk 500 miles* around Castle Douglas and environs to raise funds for the Stepping Stones Food Bank serving Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie, South West Scotland. I aim to walk between 10,000 and 15,000 steps daily, and aim to complete 500 miles by Halloween 2021

I have mental health as well as physical health issues. I believe it is important to think of others and give something back to our community. I have received a lot of kind help from the NHS., so I wish to do something positive to give back.

I hope you will consider supporting this appeal, and together we can help those in need in Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie. The size of the donation is not important, even a small amount given would really help! Thank you so much! Please help spread the word by sharing with your contacts!

This walk is dedicated to all living beings everywhere who are hungry.

Funds will be used to purchase vegetarian food e.g. breakfast cereal, tins of veg (for ethical reasons, I am veggie) for the Stepping Stones Food Bank. Any excess funds raised will also go to the food bank.

Transparency: This is a personal fundraiser and donations raised on justgiving.com will be transferred to the Stepping Stones A/C from my A/C. Due to Scottish Charity Regulator rules, funds are not allowed to be transferred directly to the Stepping Stones A/C from this justgiving.com appeal, but need to go through my A/C.

Stepping Stones Food Bank is part of Castle Douglas Development Forum, Registered Scottish Charity SC043639. Food Bank Manager: Ms Emma Haigh.

I have now completed the 500 miles I set out to walk. Thank you so much to everyone who donated or who even just offered kind words of support. The response from our local community has been fantastic. We have raised enough money to keep the Stepping Stones foodbank running for almost 3 weeks. Thank you! "I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver." ~ Maya Angelou Facing into a second covid winter, foodbanks are needed more than ever, especially now with the Universal Credit cut of £20 being imminent.

According to the Trussell Trust (charity which runs 1300 foodbanks across UK) if the Government goes ahead with next month's cut to the weekly £20 uplift to Universal Credit: 1.2m people in UK will be forced to skip meals 1.3m will be unable to afford to heat their homes this winter 670k will be unable to afford the power to cook food 900k will not be able to afford essential journeys. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far. It takes £2K to keep our food bank running for one month. I have now walked 461 miles. Thank you!

“No act of kindness no matter how small is ever wasted.” – Aesop. Thank you so much to everyone who has supported my walk so far. The £766 donated by all you kind people will definitely help people in our community who struggle to afford food. After 21 days I am now at 134 miles which is 35 miles ahead of my target for this stage. It has been challenging walking recently as we had a heatwave here, but I was able to keep going and am averaging over 6 miles daily. Today and tomorrow I am taking a rest. Thank you everyone!
